In 2005 NAATPN launched the “Voices from the Village” campaign, initiating a nationwide educational radio ad project to inform the black community and the public at large about the dangers of tobacco use and smoking.
As part of this campaign NAATPN secured the support of some very concerned celebrities who understand the dangers posed by tobacco abuse in the black community and within the public at large. Actor and activist Harry Belafonte, actress S. Epatha Merkerson, and sportscaster James Brown of NFL Fox Sports have recorded public service announcements.
Now, in 2009 NAATPN has launched its second wave of public service announcements with the support of actor and comedian Tommy Ford, teen actor Marc John Jefferies and radio talk show host and political activist Warren Ballentine. More celebrities are being approached to work in support of NAATPN’s ad campaign and other activities.
The PSAs are based on statistics that show tobacco use, smoking and smoking-related illnesses having a devastating effect on African Americans. The 30-60 second spots are available for radio stations, state health departments, and statewide African American networks, organizations and /or coalitions involved in tobacco control in each state.
Each set of PSAs is accompanied by information about the campaign, tobacco-related fact sheet, a short history of African Americans and tobacco and helpful tips for getting the message on the air.
