National African American Tobacco Prevention Network
Vision
NAATPN's technical assistance and training services strive to provide the community competent organizational development, grassroots organization and tobacco control advocacy expertise necessary to effectively address tobacco challenges in communities of African descent.

Funding
NAATPN is funded, in part, by donations, contributions, membership and training fees, and a cooperative agreement (5U58DP001528-02) with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

History
NAATPN was launched after a national stakeholders meeting in Dallas in December 1999; the organization was chartered in late 2000. The organization's national headquarters was recently relocated to Durham, NC, where it provides services to its members and organizations.

Successes
Over the past several years, NAATPN successes include:

  • Coordination of national membership meeting for African Americans in tobacco control
  • Selection of a governing body representing all regions of the U.S.
  • Convening a national meeting of African American clergy in tobacco control
  • Facilitation of on-site training and technical assistance in more than 40 states
  • Participation in the Priority Populations Initiative of the American Legacy Foundation
  • Development of a culturally appropriate smoking cessation training protocol
  • Development of a communications infrastructure including a website (www.NAATPN.org), listserv and on-line newsletter
  • Parlaying national meetings into national consensus around a strategic plan for tobacco control in communities of African descent.
  • Worked with national organizations, former Secretaries of Health and Human Services, and House of Representative members to address menthol in the proposed FDA regulatory legislation (HR 1108/S 625)
